The Lenoir County Board of Education on Nov. 3 heard district leaders report that teachers won 65 Tri County Electric mini-grants worth $51,602.16, money the district said will be used directly in classrooms.
The board publicly recognized Christina Jones, a teacher at Moss Hill Elementary School, who was named district elementary science teacher of the year by the North Carolina Science Teachers Association. Jones told the board the award ‘‘means a lot,’’ adding, ‘‘My parents were both educators. I love science.’’
The board also honored the principal and staff at Rochelle Middle School for what presenters described as transformational leadership: lower discipline incidents, reduced staff turnover and higher teacher satisfaction. Board members credited those improvements with rising school performance, including a reported 27-point increase in the school performance score and placement in the top 5% for growth in North Carolina, according to the presentation.
Board members and presenters emphasized that the mini-grants and outside fundraising support amplify classroom resources. Unidentified district presenters said 100% of Tri County grant funds ‘‘go into the classrooms for teaching and learning,’’ and praised teachers for pursuing supplemental funding.
The board concluded the recognition portion of its agenda and moved on to other business. No further action was required for the awards and grant announcements.
