The Los Angeles City Council honored Bárbara Romero, director of Sanitation and Environment, for 13 years of service, offering tributes from colleagues across the dais.
Concejal Hernández opened the recognition, saying Romero’s leadership advanced equity and sustainability and citing programs such as the city’s water recycling and green infrastructure efforts. Romero, introduced from the dais, thanked councilmembers and staff and reflected on her tenure, noting the commitment of the department’s workforce and the personal tradeoffs required to run an around‑the‑clock operation.
Councilmembers recalled Romero’s work to create pathways to middle‑class jobs for formerly incarcerated people and unhoused Angelenos, and they praised her role in securing and administering water‑quality funds described in committee reports. Colleagues including Concejal Makowski, Concejal Park and others emphasized Romero’s accessibility and steady leadership during emergencies and major infrastructure projects.
Romero said she plans to continue serving in some capacity and thanked the workforce and her family; the council adopted a commemorative resolution and presented her with a proclamation.
The recognition consumed a substantial portion of the early agenda but did not involve a formal policy action beyond the ceremonial resolution.
