Superintendent says Lorain City Schools lost roughly $6+ million in recent actions, warns of budget work to come

The superintendent told the Lorain City Board of Education on Dec. 17 that the district must confront significant recent reductions in revenue and that balancing the budget will be an urgent priority.
"The state government took away 4,100,000.0 right before the school year started, [the] federal government took 1,000,000 dollars away right before the school year started, and our county commissioners voted to extend a piggyback to retirees, which cost the district another million dollars," the superintendent said, describing those figures as the primary immediate pressures on the district’s finances.
The superintendent said more detail on corrective steps will be provided later and that some discussions about finances will occur in executive session because of personnel and sensitive bargaining matters. "So we've got our work cut out for us in terms of making sure that we provide our community with the quality education that you deserve," he said.
Board members did not vote on a budget resolution at the special meeting; instead the agenda proceeded to items that included the MOU on continuing‑education credits. The board scheduled its organizational meeting for Jan. 12, 2026, followed by the regular meeting, and the superintendent said staff will coordinate follow‑up briefings for community groups on request.
The superintendent’s dollar figures were presented in the meeting as approximations and were not accompanied by supporting documents in the public session; the district indicated it will present more detail in follow‑up materials.
