The Vigo County budget committee voted to convert the veterans office administrative assistant to a full-time position after hearing from the office about workload and continuity concerns.
The veterans service representative told the committee the office has seen more than 5,000 veterans since the current chief took the role and said the office needs an extra full-time Veterans Service Officer (VSO) and for the current part‑time administrator, Charlotte, to be moved to full time so training and continuity are possible.
Committee members and HR staff discussed how the position should be graded in the salary ordinance (grade 5 series was discussed), how the change affects budgeted headcount and how benefits interact with existing VA health coverage for disabled veterans. After discussion, a committee member moved to change the administrative assistant position to full time; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote.
HR staff said they would assign an appropriate grade and work with the county payroll system to finalize the position’s classification and pay. The committee did not record a separate dollar figure for the change at the meeting; members asked departments to follow up with specific budget numbers during budget-finalization steps.
Committee members praised the veterans office’s work and asked administrators to provide final grade and cost details for the ordinance.
