Florence City Council unanimously approved two separate resolutions granting nonexclusive 20-year electric franchises within city limits: Resolution R7 to Owen Electric Cooperative and Resolution R8 to Duke Energy Kentucky.
Council described both measures as housekeeping items previously discussed at earlier meetings and emphasized the nonexclusive nature of the franchises. "This resolution is for Owen Electric and Duke," a council member said while asking to clarify whether individual customers with existing contracts (for example solar customers) would be required to switch; the mayor and staff confirmed the franchises are nonexclusive and that existing customer arrangements would not be overridden.
Roll-call results were recorded for each resolution. For R7 the council voted 5'0 in favor; for R8 the council also voted 5'0 in favor.
What happens next: the city will finalize franchise agreements consistent with the approved resolutions; staff indicated these are consistent with prior bid documents and formal responses.
