The Arlington City Council voted to adopt the city's six-year Transportation Improvement Plan (TIP) for 2026 through 2031, a required listing that makes local projects eligible for state and federal grant programs and distribution of motor vehicle fuel-tax funds.
Jim, the city's transportation representative, presented the plan and said that in recent years the city has secured roughly $26 million for transportation projects through grants, local funds and developer contributions. He emphasized that a project must be listed on the state's six-year TIP to be eligible for state or federal grant funding and for a share of the half-percent motor vehicle fuel tax.
Councilmembers thanked Jim and his staff for grant-writing and program work. With no substantive public comment on the item, a councilmember moved to adopt the resolution and authorize the mayor to sign; the motion was seconded and carried on a voice vote.
Adoption of the TIP does not itself appropriate funds; rather, it is a programmatic step that enables the city to seek or accept specific grant awards and to show planned projects to county and state partners.
Councilmembers urged new council members to review the six-year plan to track projects as they move into funding and construction phases.
