Commission approves two setback variances after planning commission recommendation

At the December meeting the Board of Commissioners took up two planning items referred from the planning commission (heard 12/08/2025). Director Seymour reported that Steve Padgett (Map 65A Parcel 057, Pleasant View Circle) requested two variances: a 30-foot variance from the 55-foot road setback to allow a 25-foot setback, and a 5-foot variance from the side property line to site a shed or shop. The planning commission recommended approval, and the board voted to grant the variances (motion by Commissioner Antonakis; second by Commissioner Henderson).
The second request came from Gregory Zellers (Map 46 Partial 049, 1944 Augusta Highway), who sought a 7-foot side-setback variance to build an open-air carport; the planning commission recommended approval and the board formally granted Zellers' variance (motion by Commissioner Clyde; second by Commissioner Antonakis).
Chair Norman clarified that approvals were limited to the yard/setback waivers and were not intended to permit commercial businesses within residential subdivisions.
