Committee approves transfers, impact-fee reimbursements and personnel policies; Western Well testing to increase

Coventry — At its Dec. 11 meeting the Coventry School Committee approved several operational motions and received brief reports on district policies and facility matters.
Budget transfers and impact fees: The committee approved a budget transfer for special-education out-of-district tuition. As staff explained, the district policy limits unattended transfers below $10,000, while out-of-district tuition typically ranges from $50,000 to $150,000, making occasional transfers necessary. The transfer motion passed unanimously.
The committee also approved two separate impact-fee reimbursements requested to cover materials (not labor) used on district projects: (1) supplies required to meet West Warwick wastewater-system requirements for sewer connection (grease traps, hair traps, filters), and (2) materials for Coventry High School science-lab renovations where district staff performed some installation. Both impact-fee motions passed 7–0.
Policies: The committee adopted the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) policy on its second reading and approved the social-media policy (confirmed as a second reading during the meeting); both policies passed unanimously.
Superintendent report — Western Well: The superintendent reported that the Western Well water supply has been restored after manganese levels declined but said the Department of Health has increased testing frequency and rigor, noting that more frequent testing may require budget adjustments. The district currently budgets roughly $12,000 annually for testing; staff said they will monitor and adjust as necessary.
Scheduling and adjournment: The committee scheduled its next meeting for Jan. 8 at the Coventry Schools Administration Building and adjourned at 8:28 p.m.
