Board hears budget and roofing updates, approves $9,875 plan for high school kitchen hood designs

Huron School District 02-2's business manager gave the board a midyear financial and construction update and the board approved a $9,875 design proposal to address complications in the high school kitchen remodel.

Business manager Mr. Christofferson told the board the district is roughly 42% through the fiscal year. He reported general-fund revenue collected at $10,569,000 (about 37% of the annual budget) versus $10,654,000 (about 38%) at the same point last year. Expenditures to date were $9,265,000 (about 32%) compared to $9,797,000 (about 35%) last year. Mr. Christofferson said the district is watching expenses where possible.

On construction, he said the middle school roof installation was nearly complete but weather could delay final work; the district has shifted focus to the high school roof replacement and that project is underway.

Under new business the board considered a JLG proposal to develop plans for the high school kitchen exhaust hood and related equipment in the amount of $9,875. Staff explained that installing an additional kitchen exhaust hood would create negative pressure in the building and require a makeup-air unit; the roof structure as currently built cannot support the makeup-air unit's weight. Architects will rework options — either strengthening the existing roof to bear the equipment or designing an adjacent structure to house components — and provide cost estimates. The board moved, seconded and approved the $9,875 proposal by unanimous roll call.

The board did not schedule additional action beyond moving ahead with design work and cost estimation.
