Englewood sets Dec. 8 interviews for District 1 vacancy; appointment or special election depends on council vote

Council members and staff clarified the timeline and legal options for filling a District 1 council vacancy during the mayor–manager meeting.
Deputy City Attorney Victoria McDermott and Deputy City Clerk Andrina Prado explained the process: interviews for District 1 candidates are scheduled for Dec. 8. If council reaches an agreement (a supermajority) on Dec. 15, the selected candidate would be sworn in at the Jan. 5 meeting. If the council cannot approve an appointment by supermajority, Colorado law will require moving to a special election to fill the vacancy.
Staff reported there are currently four applicants for District 1; the application deadline for the vacancy closes at close of business on the Friday before Dec. 8. Board and commission application windows were noted as closing Dec. 12 at end of day. Mayor Pro Tem Joe Anderson asked whether a vote would occur even if council could not reach an agreement; Deputy City Attorney McDermott confirmed a vote is required either way, and failure to appoint triggers a special election.
No appointment or vote occurred during this check-in; staff will proceed with scheduled interviews and return to council with appointment options following the Dec. 8 interviews and any Dec. 15 action.
