A county economic-development nonprofit asked Humboldt County supervisors to increase funding to support staff needed to manage three countywide entities it recently absorbed: Humboldt County Housing, the Humboldt County Community Foundation and the Humboldt County Food Pantry.
The presenter said the organization spent the past year on rebranding and restructuring, and that without a full-time staff position it cannot operate the three entities. She reported an increased capital investment of $3,800,000, 85 retained jobs, three new jobs, a $65,000 loan to a small business and $14,500,000 in additional taxable valuation tied to projects the organization helped advance.
Board members asked about the requested annual increase and whether the organization could reduce the ask; the presenter said she would aim to lower the requested amount and that the bulk of the county request would support staffing. Supervisors also discussed competition for industrial sites, noting the importance of shovel-ready parcels and infrastructure to attract prospects. The board thanked the presenter and said it would consider the request as part of the budget process.
