Historic sign-and-facade grants wrap up; payments issued for 601 West Cherry and Lumberjack Pizza

Staff updated the Flagstaff Heritage Preservation Commission on Dec. 17 that the grant-tracking for historic signs and facades is largely complete: the last pending grant payment was issued, inspection photos for 601 West Cherry were attached to the meeting materials and the Lumberjack Pizza (Route 66) project has been paid out.
Lauren (staff) said the grant program is funded by the BBB tax and is intended to cover exterior-facing work such as signs, facades and public-right-of-way improvements. "The grant just paid for part of the stucco work on this house," she said, and noted that some projects included line-item work such as stone on a chimney.
Staff clarified the grant program is distinct from other housing- and sustainability-focused programs. Federal historic tax credits have eligibility limits, Lauren said: federal credits generally require income-generating property and therefore cannot be used for owner-occupied single-family residences, while the city's façade grant has no such owner-occupied restriction. Several commissioners asked whether grants serve older owner-occupied households; staff said the façade grant is separate, but other income-qualified sustainability programs exist and could be layered if funding sources permit.
Staff reported continued interest in the program and said applications may arrive in January; the commission acknowledged the updated inspection evidence and closed the grant-tracking item for now.
The grant program remains governed by the grant guidelines and by the BBB tax funding restrictions; staff said they would report back on any new applications.
