Harlingen honors Coach Josue Cano, local businesses and nonprofits

Mayor Norma Sepulveda read a proclamation honoring Coach Josue Cano Jr. for more than 30 years of service to Zavala Elementary and "do[ing] hereby proclaim 11/19/2025 as Coach Josue Cano Junior Day," marking his retirement and community contributions.
The commission also presented certificates to the Harlingen South Hawks varsity boys and girls tennis teams in recognition of their 2025 District 32‑5A championships and multiple all‑district and academic honorees. Commissioners invited players and parents for photos and congratulated coaches.
Sirs Martini Lounge received a certificate after winning the People's Choice Award for best commercial interior; owner Jesus Pena thanked the downtown committee and staff for the recognition. Janie Diaz, manager of Panchita's Mexican Restaurant — the mayor's business of the month — said the restaurant has served the community for two decades and highlighted ongoing food‑aid and charitable efforts.
The commission also proclaimed November as Children's Grief Awareness Month and 11/20/2025 as Children's Grief Awareness Day; a representative from the Children's Bereavement Center invited commissioners and the public to a candlelight vigil at their facility on South Sunshine Strip.
The recognitions were ceremonial and no formal votes were required.
