Dorseyville Middle School staff outlined a new student ambassadors program and six student ambassadors spoke to the board about tours, cafeteria efficiency ideas, and technology supports. Administrators said 117 students expressed interest, 88 applied and 46 were accepted.
Dorseyville Middle School staff and students presented a newly launched student ambassadors program to the Fox Chapel Area School District board on Dec. 2.
Principal Dr. Laura Miller introduced counselors and staff who developed the program, saying they "determined that there was a need to create more opportunities to cultivate leadership skills among our students." Counselors Craig Reinhart and Ethan Wagner described an application process that considered grades, discipline records, teacher recommendations and short essays; staff reported 117 students attended an informational meeting, 88 students completed applications and 46 students were accepted into the program.
Six ambassadors addressed the board. Rosie Echeverria, an eighth grader and student council president, said, "Student ambassador is an amazing opportunity for students like us to help others in extraordinary ways," and described peer tours and support for new students. Other ambassadors proposed operational ideas — for example, a student suggested dismissing teams separately during lunch to improve line flow and give students more eating time.
Students also described technology supports for new students, citing Schoology, PowerSchool and Gmail as tools that help with grades, classroom materials and communication. Staff outlined ongoing ambassador activities, including grade-level meetings, move-up-day tours, summer orientation tours and involvement in regional events.
What happens next: administrators said they will continue biweekly ambassador meetings and explore expanding student and parent ambassador roles; the board thanked students and staff for the presentation.
