The Town of Southborough Trails Committee voted Dec. 18 to approve an estimate for trail regulatory and wayfinding signs and to move forward with printing and installation.
The chair presented sign designs intended to clarify trail starting points and to discourage access to restricted areas, describing a 12‑by‑18‑inch "You are here" sign, several directional arrows and "No access" signs for areas near the radio‑tower access road and other sensitive locations. The chair said the signs are intended to blend with the environment (green color) and to include an orientation indication; members suggested clearer north/east/west markers in the map.
A vendor listed in the meeting as already vetted by the town (name appears in the transcript in two variants, including "Sinerama" and "Signorama") provided an estimate the chair read aloud. The chair read the total aloud in the meeting as: "Total cost, $4.49 80" and said the purchase would be tax‑exempt. Committee members asked about color and placement; one member supported the green color to keep signage unobtrusive.
Will Warren moved to approve the signage as discussed; Tom seconded. The motion passed on a roll‑call voice vote with members recorded as voting yes.
On installation logistics, committee members reported the vendor would assemble hardware and graphics but preferred not to perform three full days of hole digging. The vendor indicated they would assist in setting posts if volunteers could dig the holes. Multiple members volunteered to dig, and the chair said the committee could use MassTrails grant funds to purchase crushed stone/gravel to finish around post bases and improve access. The committee discussed hole depth (roughly two feet) and possible DPW equipment support if volunteers encounter ledge or large rocks.
The committee did not set a firm installation date; members said the vendor could install in January if ground conditions allow and sign placement and volunteer coordination are arranged.
