The Springfield City Council used its final meeting of 2025 to honor two outgoing members and to choose leadership for 2026.
Councilors paid tribute to Councilor Sean Curran and Councilor Tim Allen for years of public service. The president read prepared remarks highlighting Curran’s leadership on economic development, housing standards and other initiatives; Curran thanked colleagues and staff. Councilor Allen received remarks emphasizing his long service, leadership on fiscal issues and committee attendance; Allen spoke about public service, community ties and his plans to remain active locally.
After the recognitions the council held its informal caucus. Nominations for vice president produced a single nominee, Councilor Jose Delgado, who was seconded and elected by voice vote; Delgado thanked his colleagues and said he would work on transparency and collaboration. For council president, Councilor Tracy Whitfield was nominated and received a majority in a roll call to become council president for 2026; Whitfield invited colleagues to an event on Jan. 5.
What happens next: Delgado and Whitfield will assume council leadership roles for the 2026 legislative and calendar year, and the council’s committee assignments and agenda scheduling will proceed under the new leadership.
