City council recognizes Imperial Border Squad and Desert Inferno Squad for volunteer service

The El Paso City Council used a mayoral proclamation on Dec. 16 to formally recognize the Imperial Border Squad and Desert Inferno Squad for volunteerism, charitable appearances and community engagement.
Representative Diana Maldonado Rocha read the proclamation, which described the groups as costuming volunteers who support local charities, hospitals and community events. Jaime Villalba, a group member, told the council the effort began with a handful of people and has grown into more than 90 volunteers who donate time to events including the El Paso Children’s Hospital and Make‑A‑Wish appearances.
Villalba stressed that members ‘‘give up time from work and family’’ and provide appearances free of charge to bring joy to children and families. He described the group as a network of several affiliated clubs and said their activities are rooted in volunteerism.
Council members thanked the volunteers for their service and accepted the proclamation.
