Board thanks students and donors; accepts multiple fundraising gifts

The Galena School Board opened the meeting by recognizing students who earned placement in ILMEA and All‑State music events and a high school theater production selected for the Illinois High School Theater Festival.
Presenters named individual students — including Liliana Asta and Luna Tham — who advanced to All‑State and invited the community to future events. The board also heard from Jim Asta, who said a Lamplight Jazz Quartet event raised $1,045 to fund lessons and clinics for the school’s music program; "we raised 1,045 for lessons and clinics for the kids," he said as he presented the funds to the district.
During the donations portion of new business, the board approved several donor gifts: two $500 contributions from the Joe Davis County Long Beard National Wild Turkey Federation for trap shooting and bass fishing, a $500 gift for the GHS drum club, a $700 donation from the John and Dorothy Drew Family Foundation, $6,100 in boys' basketball donations and $17,000 raised for the girls' basketball program. Board members noted the importance of volunteers and asked the community to be thanked for consistent support.
Administrators also noted a sizable community donation that cleared more than $5,000 in unpaid kindergarten through eighth‑grade fees; the donor’s gift will be publicly recognized at a future board meeting. All donation motions were presented, seconded and approved by roll call.
