Resident urges speed reduction, council schedules work session on Country Club Road safety

Steven Horvath told the Chickasha City Council that West Country Club Road lacks sidewalks or shoulders, has a narrow overpass limiting visibility and sees heavy afternoon traffic that puts pedestrians and cyclists at risk. "I'm asking the city to lower the speed limit across West Country Club Road 35 miles an hour as an immediate low cost first step," Horvath said during citizen comments.

Council members acknowledged the complaint and discussed related trouble spots in the same neighborhood. One council member noted the development to the north has increased traffic and suggested traffic counts and stop signs at several intersections, including 9th and Country Club. City leaders said they will schedule a work session that includes public works and the police department to review speed limits, stop signs and enforcement options.

The discussion referenced a prior stop-sign issue on Country Club and described recent temporary fixes and permanent replacements at problem locations. Council members and residents said larger vehicles sometimes ignore posted restrictions and that speeds often exceed posted limits. The mayor and council did not take formal action on a speed change during the meeting; they moved to a future work session to gather data and hear department recommendations.

Next steps: the council directed staff to place a Country Club Road safety review on a future work session agenda to consider traffic counts, potential stop signs, speed-limit reductions and enforcement strategies. No ordinance or speed-limit change was adopted at the meeting.
