Resident urges council to reconsider US 31 subarea plan, warns of displacement

During public comment, Laurie Shillings of 223 Walter Court urged the council to reconsider a proposed US 31 Corridor subarea plan, saying the plan’s sketches showed her home flattened to accommodate high-density townhomes or condos priced about $400,000–$500,000 and that the result would displace “50 families, myself included.”
Shillings told the council the median home prices indicated monthly mortgage payments would be roughly $3,000–$4,000, placing those units out of reach for existing neighborhood residents. She urged council members to consider the potential impact on families who support the city’s tax base, send children to local schools and who are not in tax-increment financing districts.
Council members acknowledged the public comment and the council’s land-use committees said work on a US 31 subarea plan would continue; earlier in the meeting the council recorded that a resolution to incorporate a US 31 subarea plan into the comprehensive plan remained in the Land Use and Special Studies Committee.
