District reviews statewide energy audit and considers replacing aging copper phone and bell systems

Superintendent Ryan McMahon told the board the district participated in the Michigan Statewide School Energy Audit and has received a report identifying inefficiencies that will inform future vendor discussions and potential large-scale replacements.
"We were part of — we're one of many districts in the state that signed up for a statewide audit on energy efficiency," McMahon said. He described the audit report as "full of numbers and such that are difficult for us to understand," but said it will guide the district's conversations with vendors when considering large-scale replacements.
McMahon also reported the district met with Spyglass, the district's communications broker, to review phone and communications services. He said the district's contract with AT&T has expired and noted the phone infrastructure relies on older copper T1 lines.
"Phone companies don't even support copper anymore," McMahon said, and added the district is "moving to a web based system." He said the replacement effort may include classroom phones, the bell/clock management system and possibly fire alarm integration depending on vendor capabilities and national time services.
No firm timeline or cost estimate for replacements was given during the meeting; the district said it is collecting quotes.
