The board had first moved into closed session under section 8(1)(a) of the Michigan Open Meetings Act at 7:14 p.m. for a periodic personnel evaluation conducted at the employee’s request; the board announced its return to open session at 8:52 p.m. Immediately after returning, the presiding board member asked for a motion "to rate superintendent Ryan McMahon as effective for the 2025–26 school year." The motion was moved by Haika and supported by Gutierrez; the roll call vote recorded unanimous support and the chair announced the motion passed 6–0.

The board introduced Scott Morell of the Michigan Association of School Boards earlier in the meeting to assist with the evaluation process.
