Torrington moves city Christmas Eve holiday to Dec. 26 for 2025, council says staff will accommodate schedules

The Torrington City Council voted to move the city’s observed Christmas Eve holiday to Dec. 26 this year, a change the wage committee recommended to give city employees a four‑day weekend. Clerk/Treasurer Strecker told the council the committee considered employee schedules and recommended the switch; she said the county is implementing the same change for this year.
Strecker advised the council that police scheduling and shift coverage present complications and estimated the change could cost the police department roughly $3,500 because shifts and holiday pay are already scheduled. Chief Matt Johnson said he expects some employees will still have to work and urged that those scheduled to work on the replaced holiday be paid appropriately. “If we do make this change, I would respectfully request that we offer that on both of the dates that the city elects to honor on that,” Chief Johnson said.
Councilman Deal moved to approve the change with a proviso that employees already scheduled to have the 24th as a holiday retain holiday pay; Councilman Warren seconded. After brief discussion about vacation scheduling and department staffing, the motion passed by voice vote with no nays.
Council directed department heads to manage vacation approvals and ensure service continuity; Strecker noted some employees have already scheduled travel and the change may be inconvenient for a minority of staff.
