The Kenner City Council voted unanimously to approve a conditional use permit for an amusement center proposed at 3501 Chateau Boulevard, Suite 102. Planning staff presented Case P1325, saying the applicant proposes a roughly 4,000-square-foot arcade and virtual-reality attraction with party rooms and that the site has more than enough parking for the proposed use.
Mister Skwinski of the planning department said the property is governed by special ordinances and that the unified development code requires amusement centers to close by 10 p.m. unless the council grants extended hours. The applicant requested extended hours to midnight on Fridays, Saturdays and select holidays; planning staff noted an established operator with similar hours already functions in Kenner and expressed no concerns about community impact. "The planning department has reviewed the application and believes this is a welcome addition to the shopping center," Skwinski said.
Council member McKinney moved to approve the conditional use and Council member Wilmot seconded. With no public speakers during the hearing and no substantive council opposition, the motion passed 5-0.
Why it matters: The approval allows a new entertainment business in a mixed commercial center that could increase foot traffic and evening activity in the Laketown/Rivertown area. The applicant must still submit signage plans to minor site plan review before sign permits will be issued.
Next steps: Applicant and property owner must complete any required minor site-plan review for signage and comply with the conditions tied to amusement centers in the Kenner code of ordinances.
