Board approves seasonal fireworks sales permit on Carefree Highway

The Maricopa County Board of Adjustment approved a temporary use permit (TU250047) allowing Red Hot Fireworks to sell consumer fireworks at a commercial site on Carefree Highway in District 3 for the customary short seasonal period spanning Dec. 19 through New Year’s Day.
Joel, county staff, said the request is identical to prior years and that the site would operate under state and county rules; the applicant provided a copy of a Daisy Mountain Fire Department permit and noted consistent procedures for setup, operator staffing and site safety. Joanna Noriega, chief operating officer for Red Hot Fireworks, said the business is a small family-owned operation and that they follow the state’s consumer fireworks rules. She told the board this is their ninth such seasonal application on the site.
Board member questions focused on the five letters of opposition filed during the mandatory posting period; Noriega said she believes the opposition came from the same person who has objected in prior years. Joel said staff recommended approval and affirmed that most similar requests have been administered rather than brought to the board.
Vice Chair Persson moved to approve the temporary use permit subject to the staff report language; Member Clapp seconded and the board approved the request by roll call, 5-0. The applicant will operate under Daisy Mountain Fire Department inspection and the county’s permit conditions.
