Mr. Schrader presented the request on behalf of Jeremy Jensen, saying the existing building measures about 136 by 22 feet and that staff estimated roughly 40 tons of debris would be hauled to Mitchell Regional Landfill at a charge of $40 per ton, for an estimated fee of $1,920. The council was asked to add the reimbursement to the economic development cleanup budget and issue payment directly to the landfill.
During discussion a councilmember urged that reimbursements be tied to redevelopment: ‘‘If they tear it down, if they build something back on it, that’s when they would get the rebate back,’’ the councilmember said, arguing the approach would spur development. Staff noted about $50,000 remained in the budget line used for property cleanup.
A motion to approve the reimbursement and pay the landfill directly carried without further amendment.
The action was recorded as approved by voice vote, with the council instructing staff to handle the payment from the economic development cleanup budget. No formal vote tallies by member were included in the record.
