The commission probed an invoice line charging Weston County property tax by a vendor (Marco). County staff and the assessor reported Marco had not filed personal-property tax returns in the county since 2021; the chairman called Marco on speaker and the vendor said it would refer the question to its tax department.
During the Dec. 16 meeting, the Weston County commissioners confronted a billing discrepancy on an invoice from a vendor identified as Marco. County staff reported the treasurer and assessor did not have records that Marco paid property tax in Weston County since 2021 but that recent invoices included a property-tax charge passed to the county.
Chair Nathan Todd placed a call to Marco during the meeting and asked why the county was being charged property tax when Marco had not filed or paid property tax in the county. On the call Todd said: "You guys are charging us Weston County property tax on this bill. You guys haven't paid property tax in Weston County in 4 years. Why are we being charged property tax when you aren't paying property tax in Weston County?" The Marco accounts representative said the question would be forwarded to their tax department and that someone would contact the chairman.
County assessor staff later said they found evidence that Marco might be a private-label name and that Great America Financial Services handled the lease agreements in the vendor chain; a record in Great America's accounts showed a piece of equipment listed at a Weston County address for 2025. Commissioners directed staff to follow up with the vendor, seek documentation of payment or explanation for the tax charge, and report back at a future meeting.
