Murrieta’s recreation staff told the City Council on Dec. 2 that the 2025 aquatics season saw substantially higher participation after the city moved programs from the closed Kellogg Sports Park pool to Vista Murrieta High School.
Victor Pitino, recreation supervisor, said the city partnered with the Murrieta Valley Unified School District and vendor Swan Aquatics to provide lap swim, public swim and swim lessons from June 7 through Sept. 28. Pitino reported that monthly participation increased by 73% compared with 2024 and totaled more than 3,300 program visits this season.
Pitino credited combined lesson blocks and adjusted program periods for improved flow, better lifeguard coverage and increased safety. He also cited enhanced social media promotion, signage and outreach across parks as contributors to higher registration and participation. Staff said they will continue the partnership with Swan Aquatics, hold a preseason planning meeting with the school district, expand early marketing in April–May, and pursue flexible staffing and recruitment strategies.
Deputy Superintendent Darren Daniels addressed the council and praised the collaboration, noting the district serves more than 21,000 students and that school–city cooperation has been mutually beneficial for families and program delivery.
Council members asked questions about operations and thanked staff and district partners for the successful transition.
Ending: Staff will convene a preseason meeting before the next swim season and continue expanded outreach and lifeguard recruitment.
