San Mateo County Harbor District staff and board members reported the Army Corps of Engineers is advancing early feasibility work on the Princeton shoreline, and that Corps staff favored softer, nature‑based approaches rather than piles and concrete walls during the initial planning charrette.
The general manager said Corps engineers looked at structural options — piles, sheet piling and concrete walls — but quickly shifted to alternatives that "let the environment work with us" and emphasized coastal processes and ecosystem impacts. A board member described a Section 111 continuing-authority study to assess damages caused by harbor structures inside the harbor, including shoaling and sedimentation around marsh areas. "So this is damages within the harbor specifically for us with Princeton Shoreline," the board member said.
Staff and commissioners noted the Corps will plan on a 50‑year planning horizon (requiring sea-level-change considerations), but the project will not be framed as a sea‑level‑rise adaptation project per se. The district said it will host a public outreach event after the next government-only meeting so residents can see charts and ask Corps staff questions.
The work remains at an early stage; Corps representatives will return with refined ideas and the board said it expects the next public‑facing meeting to narrow options and elicit community input. The district emphasized the need to examine inner‑harbor shoaling, marsh health and potential beneficial reuse of sand already in the harbor as part of any solution.
