School Committee approves Vision of the Learner to guide district instruction

District presenters described the design-team process that began in January 2024, which included administrators, teachers, students, parents and community members. The design team identified five broad skills — communicate (to express), collaborate (to connect), navigate change (to adapt and thrive), problem-solve (to innovate) and analyze (to think critically) — and developed subskills and "I can" statements aligned to grade-band progressions. Staff said materials and visuals are posted on the district website and that student leaders were trained to help lead teacher professional learning on the skills.
The committee's vote approved implementation steps for the 2025-26 school year emphasizing classroom pilots, cross-school sharing of strategies and celebrations of promising practice. Administrators said the plan centers student voice and will include pilot projects, teacher collaboration and professional learning supports.
Chair remarks thanked the design team and emphasized next steps for rollout and progress monitoring. The approved materials will be used to inform curriculum planning and professional development over the coming year; implementation details and progress measures were not finalized in the meeting and will be reported to the committee during the coming school year.
