Board approves staff recommendation to reject out-of-range facility bids and rebid by school

District facilities staff told the Board of Education that bid returns for remaining bond-funded projects — the high school gym, Salt Brook and Allen W. Roberts gymnasiums, cafeteria alternates and the middle school gym — came back substantially above the funds available from the bond referendum. Staff said punch-list work on HVAC contracts is nearly complete but that the remaining projects could not be completed within the current budgeted amounts.
"We're recommending that we reject all bids, and then what we're going to do is rebid it," a district staff member told the board, explaining the plan to rebid by individual school to encourage competition and to allow the district to prioritize work that can be completed within available funds.
Staff said they plan to advertise immediately so that award resolutions could be presented at the January meeting and, if awarded promptly, work could proceed for summer construction. The board voted on the staff recommendation and approved rejecting the bids and moving ahead with the rebid plan.
No dollar amounts for pending awards were approved at the meeting; staff said the base bids initially returned were higher than anticipated and that they will return to the board with bid awards and recommendations once the rebidding process is complete.
