McLean County urges timely book submissions, consolidates publication dates

The presenter said first assessment books were submitted Feb. 26 and the last set on Sept. 18, allowing publication on Sept. 29 — an improvement from prior years when late submissions pushed deadlines into November and December. He credited timely submissions with giving staff “a lot more calendar to work with.”
The office is emphasizing the statutory submission deadline of June 15 (or the next business day if it falls on a holiday or weekend) and reported that 25 townships met that deadline this cycle. The presenter described consolidating publication dates down to three per year as a goal, saying three dates are likely ‘‘the sweet spot’’ under current law and help county staff provide consistent information to taxpayers.
Practical note: assessors were reminded that if a township has a newspaper published locally, the assessment role must be published there; McLean County currently has nine different newspapers for required publications.
Next step: staff asked assessors to communicate in advance if they cannot meet the June 15 deadline so the county can plan and avoid last-minute scrambling.
