Students from across the district and educators were recognized at the board meeting: student Christmas-card winners were announced and multiple teacher, principal and paraprofessional awards were handed out, with the superintendent framing the event as recognition of public school investment.
Anson County Schools used its Dec. 11 board meeting to spotlight student and staff achievements, announcing winners of the district’s student-designed Christmas card and several educator awards.
Superintendent opened the recognitions portion of the meeting by emphasizing the district’s mission: “Our primary purpose is to develop student learners and develop them as leaders,” he said, and he showed the district’s Christmas card featuring student artwork. The superintendent named the student on the cover, Sadie Sykes, a second-grader at Ansonville Elementary School, and invited many other student winners forward for photos and applause.
The board also announced annual educator awards. The superintendent named the Principal of the Year for the 2025–26 school year as Dr. Heather Gerald Wayzburg (Primary School) and the Teacher of the Year as Melinda Robinson of Anson Early College High School, who was also the district-level teacher winner. Other awards included Exceptional Children’s Educator of Excellence (Renee Soder), CTE Teacher of the Year (Zach Scoggins), and Beginning Teacher of the Year (Taylor Bernash). Multiple school-level teacher and paraprofessional winners were also recognized (examples read aloud: Landon Allen, Anson High School; Maricel Hernandez, Anson Middle School; Tammy Campbell, Weidzborough Primary School; Angela Johnson, Anson Middle School).
Several recipients were not able to attend and were acknowledged in absentia. The superintendent closed the segment by thanking families and community partners for allowing the district to invest in students and asked the audience to give recipients a standing ovation.
The recognition segment included a photo opportunity and informal remarks reflecting on the role of schools and community partnership. The board then proceeded to the public comment and business portions of the meeting.
Next steps: award recipients will be posted by the district and digital art will be shared on the district’s Facebook page, as noted during the meeting.
