El Centro council favors curved shelter design for future stops, directs staff to pursue Option 1

Public works director Abraham Compels presented two design options (a rounded, higher curved roof and a flatter alternative), citing the desire for darker lower panels to reduce visible graffiti and a white upper surface to reflect heat. Compels said costs are comparable to existing shelters but that the new shelters require a thicker six‑inch slab rather than four inches.
Council members discussed bench styles, accessibility and features such as schedule displays or QR codes. Staff said the design could include integrated trash receptacles and mounting for schedules/QR codes and that the new shelters would include ADA compliance and lighting. Councilmember motioned for Option 1, the motion was seconded and carried 5–0.
Staff will coordinate with ICTC (Imperial County Transportation Commission) to incorporate the chosen design into the ICTC replacement project and will return with implementation details for work beyond ICTC’s scope.
