Alexandria district: 12 of 13 enrollment targets met, kindergarten shortfall to affect budget planning

Superintendent Rick Stansted told the Alexandria Public School District board on Nov. 18 that overall enrollment is close to projections, but one area — kindergarten — is below expectations and will be monitored as the district prepares its revised winter budget.

"From an overall perspective... 12 of our 13 targets, at least what we expected, hit the marker within, I think, within 5 students plus or minus," Stansted said, then added that kindergarten was the one area "off from an estimation" and that administrators will continue to track the data. He warned that kindergarten shortfalls can affect budget projections and noted the district will revisit numbers in the revised budget this winter.

Board members raised broader demographic concerns and sought regional comparisons. A member cited statewide demographer findings presented at the Minnesota Rural Education Association conference; Stansted and others referenced state demography trends and the need to consider child‑care and housing policies when examining enrollment shifts. The board committed to reviewing more detailed demographer data coming back from a November briefing in St. Paul.

Stansted emphasized recruiting and retention strategies, including kindergarten camp, school choice options, and high‑school and middle‑school programming that create leadership pathways and help retain students. He also asked principals to continue monitoring graduating class sizes and how those cohorts interact with incoming kindergarten classes to inform longer‑term fiscal planning.

The update was informational; the board did not take a separate vote tied specifically to enrollment figures during the meeting. Staff said they will return with updated numbers and analyses as they prepare the district's revised budget later in the winter.
