The Quincy Zoning Board of Appeals voted to approve a variance request from homeowner Daniel Lehi to construct a two‑story rear addition, a covered front (farmer’s) porch, a side deck and to relocate and attach a one‑car garage at 43 Sunrise Road.
Lehi told the board the work will add roughly 1,000 square feet and includes a covered front porch roughly 6 by 24–25 feet and a second‑floor bedroom with a walkout deck. DPW asked for additional materials to be submitted, including existing site plans, drainage and grading details and, if applicable, an elevation certificate.
Neighbors who spoke in favor said the renovation would stabilize the property and keep the family in the neighborhood. ‘‘He turned a drug den with a lot of sweat equity into a beautiful house,’’ said neighbor James Callahan, who gave his address as 173 Hawkins.
Board members questioned garage placement and suggested reducing its width; the motion to approve included an explicit acknowledgment that the approved garage width will be 13 feet. The motion passed with members voting in favor. The board noted the applicant must provide revisions and any DPW‑requested documentation to complete the administrative file.
The decision is final subject to any appeal rights; the board did not set a construction start date and encouraged the applicant to file the outstanding documentation before permits are issued.
