The subcommittee heard a series of operational updates Dec. 15. Administrators said Pine Valley will switch food-service vendors from the prior provider (referred to as Reinhardt in the transcript) to Performance Food Group and expect improved taste and cost savings: "so we're really excited about that" and staff estimated savings of roughly $20,000 per month.
Administrators also described clinical and quality-of-care changes. A wound-care physician referred to as Fora began visiting Dec. 1 and a Part B wound-care supplier called Gentel was added; staff said bringing these services in-house will lower wound-care costs substantially by shifting billable services to residents' Part B benefits rather than facility expense. The facility is rolling out a new orientation program and plans to bring therapy and a speech therapist into staff training to reduce readmissions and fall risk.
Members raised infrastructure and billing questions: water-supply work will favor a recoating approach (estimated $4,000) rather than a costly city hookup (estimated $900,000). Committee members discussed funding for ambulance/EMS coverage, noting that townships may pay a baseline service fee (examples discussed in the meeting included a $2,500 minimum and per-call fees around $225), and staff clarified Pine Valley can only bill Medicare for certain transports and cannot bill Medicaid directly.
Staffing and turnover drew sustained attention. Members reported increasing use of agency staff and asked for monthly vacancy and turnover reports to track how agency usage affects costs. One member suggested posting vacancies and hires on a regular cadence so managers can view open positions and trend turnover; staff agreed to bring that information to future meetings.
No formal votes were taken on contracts or vendor selection at this meeting; administrators described changes as operational decisions in progress and promised additional detail in future reports.
