Elmont parent urges board to preserve student science research opportunities

At the public comment portion of the Dec. 16 meeting, Elmont resident and parent Sheldon Meekle spoke in support of district science research programs, citing the influence the program had on his son’s education and career path.
Meekle listed several competitions where participation has been canceled or is uncertain — the Malloy Science Fair, the Nassau Community College science fair, the Brookhaven Labs Regional Science Bowl, the Brain Bee and the South Asian American Women's Alliance Science Fair — and urged the board and district staff to continue supporting those student opportunities.
"This demonstrates the potential of our high school district scholar scientists," Meekle said, referencing past finalists and noting local alumni success. The board thanked Meekle for his remarks; no formal staff response or motion was recorded during the public comment period at this meeting.
Also during public comment, Dr. Angela Hunt, president of the Sewanhaka Central Council PTA, thanked the board for their work and presented a small 'relax and recharge' gift from the council.
