Brian Messenger, the Sewanhaka Central High School District director of instructional technology, told the board that the district has upgraded its camera and audio systems and expanded staff training.
Messenger said the district added 73 new cameras over the last year and that "as of this morning, our count of cameras throughout the district is 541 to ensure student safety." He described the field camera configuration as three cameras per turf field (two AI motion‑detection cameras plus one PTZ camera) that operate with white flashing lights during preset hours (currently 10 p.m. to 5 a.m.). When the system detects someone on a field during those hours it records video, tracks movement and emails alerts to district security staff so they can investigate.
Messenger also outlined recent auditorium audio upgrades, 350 hours of instructional coaching provided to staff, cybersecurity and phishing training campaigns, and a new digital citizenship curriculum for seventh grade health classes. He credited in‑house staff for designing and implementing the camera infrastructure and noted vendor support for demonstrations used in the presentation.
Board members asked about timing; staff indicated the cameras will be installed once press boxes are completed, with a March timeframe mentioned for the press‑box work.
The board did not vote on procurement or contract awards at this meeting; Messenger’s presentation was an informational update.
