Rolling Hills Estates council names Derringer mayor, honors outgoing Mayor Jeff Piper

Mayor Pro Tem Derringer said the council appreciated voter support and noted Piper’s strengths on planning and fiscal matters. Piper, in brief remarks, acknowledged differences of style across the dais and said, “Everyone's trying to do what they think is best for the city.”
The council also nominated and confirmed Dr. James Black as mayor pro tem. The appointments were handled by motion, second and vote during the reorganization portion of the meeting. Councilmembers who participated in the roll calls included Council member Mersch, Council member Black, Mayor Pro Tem Derringer and Mayor Piper.
No formal policy decisions accompanied the leadership changes; the council moved immediately from the reorganization into regular business and committee items. The council recessed later to celebrate the mayoral transition and the mayor’s birthday with staff and residents.
