Planning board postpones livestock/auction-sales setback text amendment to December public meeting

Madison County’s Planning and Zoning Board discussed a proposed text amendment that would change zoning regulations to address setbacks for auction barns and livestock sales, and then voted to postpone final action until the board’s December meeting.

Staff and a drafting committee circulated a working draft; one member cited an Economic Development Committee (EDC) draft that would prohibit livestock sales within 100 feet of residential districts. The chair urged the board to move the draft forward to the Board of Commissioners so the commission could decide whether to approve, alter, or delay the change. Some members said they wanted additional review and final wording; others pressed to transmit the board's text to the commissioners promptly.

After discussion the board made a motion to change the consideration date and ultimately set the item to appear again on the 12/16 agenda. Staff said the final draft would be distributed to the board before that meeting and that a committee meeting on the text was scheduled.

The chair framed the board's role as a recommending body: the planning board prepares a recommended text amendment and then forwards it to the Board of Commissioners, which may accept, modify or reject it. The board did not adopt any text amendment during the meeting; it postponed further action to allow for final drafting and broader review.

Next steps: staff will send the final draft to the board, and the item will be revisited at the December public meeting for a vote or further direction.
