The Port Orchard mayor thanked volunteers and donors at Tuesday's meeting and updated the council on waterfront improvements and park projects.
Mayor (Speaker 3) described the dedication of Givens Park and credited Alex Wynne for a petition of about 200 signatures supporting a futsal court; he also noted a $50,000 contribution from the Port Orchard Rotary Club toward the project. The mayor said public works has completed landscaping and other improvements.
The council then debated when and whether to open a restroom in the waterfront 'substation' facility to the public. Merchants, including an email from Sam Smith at Josephine's, raised objections on expected operational costs and safety; staff said a railing must be installed and ADA compliance still needs work, so the restroom is not ready for daily opening. The Port of Bremerton asked staff not to open it daily. Staff recommended opening the restroom for weekends and special events when the waterfront is active and said they would aim to have it available by spring when seasonal activity resumes. Council members asked staff to bring options, and staff said opening and locking the facility on a daily basis would require significant staff time.
