Teen resident asks Alamogordo commissioners to complete Desert Lakes sidewalks

During public comment on Dec. 16, 16‑year‑old Landon Leslie asked the City Commission to complete sidewalks on both sides of Desert Lakes Road. Leslie told commissioners the family owns a home in the Tierra De Espinios subdivision and recently purchased a home on South Florida; she said she has “almost been hit multiple times” while bicycling on Desert Lakes and described the lack of continuous sidewalks as a pedestrian safety concern.
Leslie urged the city to finish sidewalks to improve safety for children, residents exercising outdoors and people who do not use cars. Mayor Susan Payne thanked Leslie for speaking and said the commission could not make immediate promises but that the concern would be noted and that staff or future commissioners may follow up.
During later discussion in the City Manager’s report, staff said a 2018 design exists for Desert Lakes but that construction was not funded; the design can be updated to include sidewalks and the project will be considered in the city’s capital improvement process.
No formal action or funding decision on Desert Lakes sidewalks was made at the meeting.
