Portage council meeting roundup: claims, licenses, appointments and routine business

At its Dec. 15 meeting the Portage Common Council approved $1,030,929.89 in claims, authorized staff to pay December claims before year-end, permitted wire payment to contractor STAB, approved taxi and secondhand-dealer licenses, confirmed election-board and BID appointments, and cancelled the second December meeting.
Portage — Beyond several major items, the Portage Common Council on Dec. 15 handled a slate of routine but consequential administrative matters.
Claims and payments: The council approved claims totaling $1,030,929.89 by roll call. Council also authorized staff to pay claims received through December prior to year-end and to present those payments at the January meeting. Because several payments to STAB (the wastewater contractor) were sizable, council authorized those transfers to be made by wire rather than by check after brief discussion about fraud and ACH alternatives.
Licenses and agents: Council approved taxi cab licenses for Right Way Bus Service (term through 6/30/2026) and multiple secondhand-dealer licenses (including EcoATM at Walmart, GameStop, Main Street Consignment, Rustic Rediscoveries, Uptown Exchange, and Zumbite Repairs) following departmental review. Council also approved change-of-agent requests for two Kwik Trip locations (John Serpico and Britney Kukta).
Appointments and meetings: The council confirmed election board appointments for 2026–2027 (submissions from the Republican and Democratic parties and nonaffiliated applicants) and appointed members to the Business Improvement District board including Jeremy Jacobson and June Lauder. Council voted to cancel its second December meeting scheduled for Dec. 25, 2025.
Procedural notes: Approval votes for these items were recorded by roll call. The meeting opened with a proclamation honoring Economic Development and Planning Director Steve Sobiec on his retirement; Sobiec thanked the council and said he plans to remain active in the community while starting a business.
The council then adjourned.
