Russell County School Board approves personnel actions, literacy plan and continues 21st Century grants

The Russell County School Board voted on a package of routine business and policy measures at its December meeting while announcing continuation funding for its after-school program.
Board members approved certification of matters discussed in executive session, adopted the meeting agenda and approved minutes from Nov. 6 and a Nov. 10 special session. The board also voted to pay the district’s bills and approved a list of resignations and retirements.
On personnel, the board approved several new hires and transfers (many listed as volunteers) and approved an action identified in the agenda as “employee A.” The motions were made and seconded on the floor and carried by voice vote.
The board advanced a policy revision in its second reading that removes phrasing about over-the-counter prescriptions from the district’s drug policy. “It is the one where we took the over the counter prescription off of our drug policy,” the superintendent said during the second-reading discussion. Members voted to approve the second reading.
Members also approved the division literacy plan compiled by Miss Jenkins. “She did,” the superintendent said when asked who prepared the plan; members moved, seconded and voted to adopt it.
Superintendent announced that continuation funding for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers program had been approved for all current schools, with total grants of approximately $1,500,000. “We really appreciate it,” the superintendent said, thanking Ms. Farmer and her team for their work obtaining the funds.
The finance report noted November sales-tax revenue of $398,002.15 and average daily membership (ADM) of 3,045 students as of October. The board set its next regular meeting for Jan. 13, 2026, with an executive session at 5 p.m. and a meeting at 6:30 p.m.
The votes reported during the meeting were carried by voice; where roll-call tallies were not recorded in the public dialog the board indicated approval with verbal assent. The board adjourned after offering holiday well-wishes and confirming plaque delivery to two students identified as hometown heroes.
