Planning commission backs rezoning request from Central Virginia Christian School, sends it to Board of Supervisors

The Buckingham County Planning Commission voted on Nov. 24 to recommend that the Board of Supervisors consider a zoning map amendment requested by Central Virginia Christian School to rezone the campus to Village Center.

Applicant Jumper Beasley told commissioners the school is expanding gradually — adding one grade per year, including a new high‑school program now housed in temporary space. Beasley said current enrollment is about 267 students and the school expects to add roughly 15–20 students per year; the new academic building proposed for land acquired in a recent county sale would house roughly 150 students once complete. The school has an agreement with James River Equipment to place some buildings on that property and anticipates using Village Center zoning to make the campus uniform, because Village Center is the district that allows private schools by right.

Commissioners asked about anticipated total enrollment after full expansion and about parking, traffic and phasing. Beasley estimated the campus could reach about 400 students over several years as the school adds grades and said the proposed academic building would be targeted for completion by August 2027. After questions, a commissioner moved to approve and forward the rezoning recommendation to the Board of Supervisors; the motion was seconded and carried.

The Board of Supervisors will receive the commission’s recommendation for final action.
