Lauderhill approves $145,000 consultant study to identify PFAS treatment needs at water plant

The Lauderhill City Commission approved a consultant agreement, not‑to‑exceed $145,000, with Calvin Giordano & Associates to produce a preliminary basis‑of‑design report assessing the municipal water plant’s needs to comply with EPA PFAS guidance.
City staff and the utilities director told commissioners the study will evaluate existing treatment processes and recommend equipment and capital improvements if PFAS levels require mitigation. The study is intended to produce engineering recommendations and probable construction costs that the city can use to pursue grants, appropriations or bonding for implementation.
Utilities Director Herb Johnson said the city is already performing required PFAS sampling as part of federal testing obligations; the consultant will synthesize sampling results, evaluate treatment options and provide a planning‑level cost estimate to support capital‑planning and funding pursuit.
Commissioner questions addressed whether sampling or pilot testing were included in the consultant scope; staff responded sampling is currently performed in‑house and the consultant engagement will focus on design analysis, options and planning‑level estimates. The commission approved the agreement 5–0.
