Hoover's mayor announced Clay Morse as the city's new police chief and the Hoover City Council voted to approve the appointment.
The mayor said he had known Morse for more than a decade and described him as "smart, innovative" and able to keep Hoover "one of the safest communities in the country." Morse's background, cited by the mayor, includes service as police chief in Pell City since March 2022 and prior roles with the Drug Enforcement Administration, where he served as an agent and section chief.
Morse addressed the council and public, thanking officials for their trust and promising to "work tirelessly" and bring a "whole of government approach to public safety in Hoover." He acknowledged the difficulty of replacing a long-serving predecessor and pledged to earn the department's trust.
Council proceeded with a roll-call vote; the appointment resolution passed by unanimous recorded 'aye' votes. The mayor said Morse's first day on the job will be one week from the meeting date.
