Mahoning County commissioners direct sales-tax renewal to ballot for road repairs

The Mahoning County Board of Commissioners voted to direct the Mahoning County Board of Elections to submit a five-year renewal of the county sales-and-use tax to voters to fund road and infrastructure repair and maintenance.
Jen, the county budget director, told commissioners the measure is "a resolution directing the Mahoning County Board of Elections to submit to the electors the renewals and continuation of an existing county sales and use tax for a period of 5 years for the repair and maintenance of roads and other infrastructures in the county." Commissioners said the sales-tax program has funded past road work and praised visible results.
President (unnamed) said of the program's map showing funded roads, "All the blue, those roads never would have been paved if it wasn't for that assistance from the voters." The board moved, seconded and approved the resolution by roll call.
The resolution does not itself change tax rates; it sends the renewal question to the ballot. The board also discussed related program items, including submitting Ohio Public Works Commission applications for 2025 road and bridge safety upgrades and a lease authorization for Cadence Care Network space at the Mahoning Valley campus of care.
The next procedural step is for the Mahoning County Board of Elections to set the ballot language and timeline for voter consideration once the county clerk delivers the certified resolution.
