The council approved a variance (F6) allowing an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) at 2446 Duncan Drive to exceed the 900-square-foot size limitation; staff said the existing building is about 925 square feet and was constructed in compliance at the time of building.
Planning staff and the planning commission recommended approval (6–0). Homeowner Debbie Lewis told the council the structure evolved over several additions and described caregiving needs for a 97-year-old relative as part of the rationale for the exception. Staff indicated the lot is at its maximum lot coverage and that the ADU standards were adopted after the original construction date, creating the present inconsistency.
The council voted to approve the variance with a single dissent noted. Staff will issue the final order and proceed with any necessary permitting steps.
